Know your colleagues
About a year ago I participated in the Insights training together with my colleagues. It basically consisted of psychological profiling according to the famous MyersâBriggs Type Indicator and then sharing tips&tricks about how to treat people at work so that it is not stressful for anyone and beneficial for a company. Must say this kind of exhibitionism pays back and I wish every manager did it with his\her team. (I would even advice every couple to spend half an hour on internet questionnaire and then read your partnerâs report thoughtfully, but this might sound too much.)
As an incentive, below are several dos and donât s for approaching each of the personality types. Disagree with them if you like, there is nothing mandatory or universal, of course. The thing to remember is that there is neither pure, single-colour or the best personality type! Otherwise, it would be too easy.
When asking for an opinion of a âBlueâ (melancholic)
- DONâT: (during the department meeting) what is your opinion about this?
- DO: (in private) I have an idea, but before moving forward, I would like to know your opinionâŠ. You donât have to answer now, letâs discuss it next week.
When meeting a âGreenâ (phlegmatic) after his\her vacation
- DONâT: Great that you are back, I will send you a recent project status update now and letâs book a timeslot today to discuss it.
- DO: How was the trip? Did the youngest enjoy it as well? ⊠Could you tell me more, as my family wants to go there next time?
When answering a question of a âREDâ (choleric)
- DONâT: Well, it depends from which side you look it at. From one point, it is a step forward, from another - we donât gain too much. We can do this, but we can also postpone. I would try and see what comes out of it.
- DO: If we go for it, it will be a real challenge. Today I will ask experts for risks and costs evaluation and we can make final decision this week.
When asking a âYellowâ (sanguine) to join another project
- DONâT: We need someone to take over a 4 year lasting project. It has a well-defined way of working, which everyone knows how to follow. You will fit in easily.
- DO: You did great job with handling the latest deadlines. Would you like to join a new initiative discussion? If we launch, you will find this work fun.
